Key 13: THE LAW OF LIBERTY

But those who look into the perfect law, the law of liberty… they will be blessed in their doing. (James 1:25)

The Law’s powerlessness to save humans from Adam’s seed, along with the growing consciousness of sin that it causes, enkindles a desire for the Holy Spirit. (CCC 708, paraphrased)

The Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom. (2 Corinthians 3:17)

The law brings a curse.  But so does anarchy.  We aren’t anarchists.  But we are not under a law anymore.  We have a King… He’s the King of kings.  What law does He ask you to follow?

For all who rely on works of law are under a curse, for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who does not observe and obey all the things written in the book of law.’ Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law… (Galatians 3:10,11)

Not religious law, not your own made-up law, not a country’s law.  God lives in you… through his Holy Spirit he gave you… to MAKE YOU FREE from law, lawlessness and law-breaking.

God needs no law to regulate himself. He’s beyond reproach. And now he lives in you!

Believing He lives in you frees you from needing to be regulated.  Christianity is freedom from law, because Christianity is freedom from sin.

For the law of the Spirit of Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.  For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do, by sending His Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, He condemned sin in the flesh… so the just requirement of the law would be fulfilled in us who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. (Romans 8:2,3)

Freedom in the Holy Spirit is our new law.  Know Him.  Know freedom.  You will cease to be lawless, and you will cease to be a judgemental hypocritical Pharisee.

The Holy Spirit has been given to us and… ‘where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom.’ Already we glory in the ‘liberty of the children of God.’ (CCC 1741; 2 Corinthians 3:17)

Pharaoh (the first Pharisee), kept the People of God in slavery in Moses’ time.  Pharisees and religious lawyers kept the People of God in slavery in Jesus’ time.

Since Jesus died on the Cross. you are now freed from slavery to all law and slavery to all sin.  And through your faith and Good News, you can help free others.

Christianity is not a way to clean up your act.  Christianity isn’t a law to keep you doing right from wrong.  Christianity is living AS HE LIVED ON THE EARTH, so that others may be saved from the misery of sin and death!
